“You talk a big game about co-existence, acceptance, and all this other crap, but when it comes down to it, you’re just scared and seething about ‘how things are supposed to be’. You want to know why Goro’s mine and not saying Sutras with your sorry lot? It’s because he likes me better.”
“It you’re just going to jeer at us…” Hijiri’s eyes narrowed.
“Oh, but I’m telling you the truth! He put you all at arm’s length because he can smell the failure on all of you and is afraid of what’ll happen if he takes the kid’s gloves off. You know what? I’ve stopped blaming him! Who wants to become a Lonely Sea-locked wrench who has to drown people to make friends, a pair of co-dependent fickle, alcoholic priests, a lazy avatar who can’t even be a puppet right, an indecisive introverted yet somehow attention-starved prankster, or a hypocrite witch hag who’s more afraid of death then a naked, beaten, broken man who at least had some fight in him!” I condemned.
“I mean, look at this circus! Look at the village! The HSE! I’d want to die a peaceful death to if these were my options! That’s why he belongs to me and not you. I may be a weak little contrarian, but I ate that fear out of him. All of you are too complacent to do the same.”
For a while the tea house was quiet as my words sunk in.
Most of what I said was meant to hurt them, but I believed every word.
Hijiri stepped over to me, raised my chair, and with a motion raised the window shutters with magic.
Outside I saw the HSE and in front of it, Goro, sitting as he was in the newspaper photo, chanting.
“I wonder how much of that spiritual energy you can see. Goro has been sitting there for more than a day chanting sutras and focusing on that building in the meantime. He’s turning himself into a missile, one that will target exclusively the HSE and destroy its target. When it’s done, his soul will most likely be annihilated.” Hijiri explained.
I did see the twisted aura coming off him. Like a dirty candle flame it flowed from below him and bellowed upward, terminating at a tip. Within it I couldn’t see any sort of screaming skulls, spinning knives, or anything else corporal, just malice.
“I’ll give you one chance to save him, but if you fail, I will take him somewhere you’ll never find him again.” Hijiri continued, stripping something from my back.
With my bindings gone I fell forward and smack my face into the floor.
“And at that point, I’ll assume your incapable of anything but sin and take appropriate precautions to protect this land.”
Getting up I gazed about the room one more time. It was as she said, all of them seem poised to let me leave, although that probably means they had other ways of tracking me.
“Hey Taoist brat.” I yell at Futo. “Why’re you here huh? Interested in some Buddhist family drama.”
She shook her head. “I would not lower myself to finding pleasure in other’s strife such as you would knave. Mine own master simply asked that I observe the situation regarding this man.”
Probably because that scheming Miko was up to something. Whatever, she could sit on her coach and watch all she wanted, just like the rest of these hacks.
“You all watch and learn.” I said, making for the door. “I’ll show you quacks how to actually ‘save’ someone’s soul”.

Next time: The heart throbbing climax! But after Halloween because I'll be doing skeleton things.
