Mario for me as a new character in the remake seemed unnecessary
I don't know what to think of him, it's obvious that he was developed as a secondary character to give exposition, expand the lore and maybe have a bigger role in the future.
But the thing is that a character like that already existed and it was Meren, seriously if you replace Mario with Meren it wouldn't change much
In fact, I think it would make more sense.
His relationship with Arc, Ciel, the church, the 27 dead apostles...
Even Mario's personality is what I always had in mind about how Meren would be lol
