The message is most definitely not that. Otherwise stuff like pic related wouldn't be a thing.

That said, it's very obviously a part 1/2. And who knows, if the next part ever comes. That's doujin for you.
Also keep in mind, that the game has several endings, and I don't remember that the mythos thing was underused or went nowhere. Did you clear them all? The biggest remaining questions involve the third major character (Kazami), how the relationship between Subaru and Ruu (and as such also Subaru and the other characters) is going to be, and the final reveals in the last ending. Expansions on the cult stuff could be also fine, but it does have a dedicated enough ending to be okay, provided you read a little between the lines.

Finished Dear my Abyss. Already.

What can I say. It was good while it lasted, but there's something missing. Or rather, quite a bit. Now for one thing, there was the fact that the game has an average length of 20 hours on EGS, while the game gets advertised as 25 hours. That may be kinda correct for someone like me when I enjoy stuff and read slow and relaxed... and get distracted by 4chan every now and then, but the game is maybe 700kb. That's Leyline 1 length, which sits at 11 hours at EGS, and is voiced. So I didn't expect this, at all. But there's also the story that kinda ends in a "wait... that was all?" way.

I tried to complete everything, just in case you can get past the final ending screen, but it doesn't seem like it. Which could just be a sequel hook and we get Dear my Abyss 2 in 7 years or whatever, which would be cool. But it could also just be a story with an ending where you still have more questions than answer.
That said, to an extend it's fine as it is. I don't think a work needs to answer everything. And I think the idea to show a story from the view of two "normal" girls, not directly involved in the greater things, although still getting dragged into it to an extend, is kinda nice. Of course they may not get to know everything, many character will remain enigmas and so on, but there's still a good amount of fun to be had. You can also rhyme yourself together a good amount, although you won't get clear answers.
Still, the one thing that's just awkward no matter what is the final ending. It just doesn't feel like that's it. And heaviest is probably Ruu. She is made to be quite interesting in her position (pic related), so I quite hope for a sequel of sorts at some point. It really needs one.

Aside of that, the presentation grows on you. While the characters are mostly silhouettes, there are a lot of backgrounds, which in a way is refreshing, even if they are photos with sometimes more and sometimes less of a filter. They are fairly well done. Music is mostly well done ambience, though towards the last third the game suddenly starts to have a few actual pieces of music and they are damn good. It's mostly just simple piano, but that didn't matter and fit with the mood. Really supported the somewhat heard wrenching scenes for example. (I've seen a lot of VN where those scenes are accompanied by so "overacted" dramatic music, that the music kills the whole impact instead)

tl;dr: I had a ton of fun, but I feel this is just part 1 or something. Regardless of a part 2 coming or not though, I don't regret reading it.
