You would be surprised how cheap making a gk can be. Sure the volks kits (and similar) are expensive but if you buy from the places outside of japan like e2046.com they are generally reasonably priced with and have cheap shipping, and there are plenty of sales as well.

I have 5 kits from e2046 and have not been disappointed with the quality of the casting.

My first kit Aozaki Aoko (pic related) http://www.e2046.com/product/8270 was about $28CAD and then about 5-6 colors of paint at $2-4 a piece. Then it was just a couple brushes (2-3$ each), some primer, glue and sandpaper and basic tools you probably already have around the house.

It takes very little paint so after you buy your initial paints each consecutive figure gets cheaper and cheaper to make. And while your initial attempts at painting might not be the greatest, it is pretty easy to strip the paint and try again. There is almost always a way to fix mistakes.

My first gk certainly cost less then the 70-120$ you would pay after shipping for a completed figure. E2046 also recasts some WF kits as well, which would be otherwise impossible or very cost prohibitive for me to obtain. I'm sure many of you are familiar with this gorgeous Tenshi kit which i am currently working on https://www.e2046.com/product/11447
