If you know how Elona experience works, you gain experience for doing anything, not just for killing creatures. Everytime she levels up her casting skills just by casting spells like debuffs/buffs, she gains experience towards her casting skills, which gives exp for her next level up. She also gains benefits from group skills like Ensemble or Preaching, when she cooks/crafts for you, etc.

It's like how you may have noticed yourself leveling up just by doing non-combat things like farming or crafting.
