nice meme, pronunciation and pitch accent do not count much, because I am Italian, the sounds are very similar.
Also, the problem with immersion is not recognizing your own bias.
That is even more so of a problem in things related to sound. Pronunciation is like singing, you can't notice you are wrong until you improve and listen to yourself back then.
I do not have a problem with the method, depending on how you do "immersion" you can make it, assuming you spend most of your time on dictionaries and grammar as soon as you find something you don't understand and assuming you use a translation for every paragraph unless you are already fluent, to check if you are in fact understanding.
There are a ton of translators who make a lot of mistakes I can recognize in English but still I am not as good as them.
Recognizing someone else's mistake is easier than reaching their level.
It's like noticing a tune out of place in a concert and say, Oh that orchestra made a few mistakes! I am totally a better musician than anyone of them
