I haven't played that many fangames, but Touhou Mother is pretty awful in just about every aspect.

The battle system is a shoddy port of Mother 2's battle system to RPG Maker 2000, complete with all the jank. The difficulty curve consists of nothing but enemies having more HP and attacks that do exponentially increasing amounts of damage the more you go on. The maps are either straight lines from point A to point B or winding and confusing but barren mazes. The soundtrack consists almost entirely of VGMusic MIDIs. The writing is nothing but secondary memes and quotes from other games, and the story is a poor imitation of Mother 2's with Touhou characters that act as if they're ripped out of a SOL doujinshi. Oh, and Pokey, Ness and the twins from Mother 3 are in it for some reason. The only thing I can say I liked about the game was the art style: the original sprites were nice portrayals of Touhou characters in Mother 2's artstyle, and the battle sprites looked good when they weren't ripped directly from other games.

That being said, I still found some enjoyment in playing it. It made me a bit nostalgic since it reminded me of how I watched YTPs and whatnot back in elementary school. Had I played it back then, I would have adored it.

I'd like to see another shot at a Mother inspired Touhou fangame, but I think a better idea would be a game using characters and settings from Touhou with gameplay and atmosphere similar to, but not an exact imitation, of Mother's rather than "Mother Characters Screw Up A Secondary's Interpretation of Gensokyo: The Game."

Oh, right, I forgot.

I played through Touhou Mother in it's entirety braced for some heart-wrenching tragedy, and...nothing happens. Things look bad here and there, especially near the end, and there's plenty of times where there COULD have been a soul-crushing scene, but no, there's nothing.
Argh.

I've never played Mother and probably never will. Can I/should I still play Touhou Mother?
