Reposting this that someone made the other day:
https://github.com/kaervin/subserv-mpv-plugin
It's an mpv plugin which sends subs to your browser so you can use your preferred Rikai clone to quickly look up unknown words.

If you need an mpv config, you can steal mine: >>>/g/70499236
sub font: https://www.google.com/get/noto/help/cjk/
>NotoSerifCJKjp-[weight].otf

I also messed with the colors of the default page on which the subs appear ( 127.0.0.1:8080 ) to create a dark version. Just replace the HTML page from the github page with this one (make sure you use the same filename and .html extension -> "subserv.html"):
https://pastebin.com/nWe11bzc

I also changed the font + font size. You can get the font here (or edit the page to change it to one of your choosing):
https://ipafont.ipa.go.jp/old/ipaexfont/download.html
>IPAexfont00201.zip(9.31 MB)

Steve made a good point about Chinese characters, saying that you should already know words they're used to write before you try to deliberately learn them (which is exactly what natives do, incidentally). He said to rely on pinyin while you're acquiring the vocabulary, but in Japanese obviously you'd use furigana instead.
