After sustaining moderate damage at Leyte, Kongo, Nagato, and Yamato set sail for Japan for a bath and tea. In a storm while passing by Formosa, they were detected by submarine Sealion which hit Kongo with two torpedoes in the bow and port boilers. Nagato barely dodged Sealion's second salvo, which unfortunately hit destroyer Urakaze and caused her to instantly sink with all hands.

Anyway, the fleet continued at 16 knots to try to escape, which caused the damage to Kongo's bow to increase, causing progressively worse flooding. After a 45 degree list to port, it was decided to abandon ship, but then her main gun magazine suddenly exploded, killing most of the crew.

Also Yukikaze was one of the escorts. RIP Kongo. RIP Urakaze.
