If you haven't read SICP, then you don't really know how to program.

>Is reading SICP worth it if you don't even want to bother programming?

No. Not unless you like math.

>I wanted to learn how computers software and whatnot works from the ground-up, starting with programming and such.

SICP does not explain how computers work. SICP is more about the mathematical foundations of computation and computer science. To put it simply, the reasoning and logic behind computer science differs wildly from how computer actually execute their instructions. SICP covers some of this (ie, tail recursion) but for the most part it covers reasoning about programs instead of reasoning about how they are executed. Both are useful, but not for your purpose.

>I have a large pool of networking books I got from a torrent, so I figured I'd read them this summer when I don't have to worry about college.

Networking is an interesting topic, but it might be hard to understand unless you understand things like data structures and C.

>The only code I've worked in is HTML, but I know that's not a real programming language. I told that to a woman at work who is a programmer/web designer and felt kinda bad; I'm pretty sure she felt quite insulted.

Well, I guess it's a start. Try branching out into JavaScript if you feel comfortable with HTML. It's actually an interesting language on its own, but even if you don't get that far into it, it will give you a feeling for how programming really works.

Once you learn Haskell (which is very easy), you will be ready to start reading your SICP.

But Python is a dead language. May as well learn Ada. Even ardent Python advocates have abandoned the language in droves over Python3. The Dive Into Python guy even went into hiding and deleted everything.

I always wander to the local library in hopes of meeting someone as sexy as Patchouli but it never seems to happen.

I've come across truckloads of Toho fanfiction in Japanese, but I didn't save or bookmark any of it, because i'm not interested in fanfiction. But http://www.tinami.com/'s 小説 section is bound to have some, I guess.
