It doesn't excuse a lie, but it certainly isn't as bad as telling a lie in a non-opinion piece. I suppose since generally articles don't provide a list of sources a lot of the time the public starts recognising a lie as fact, which may occur in this situation, but as opinion pieces aren't read as widely as other content it really isn't a huge issue so you shouldn't really be fussed at all about it.

If you know there's a lie, I'd guess it is likely that others would see the lie too, yet if they don't given something on a subject such as this it is hardly a life-changing issue.
