Ok, first of all, the death penalty has not been abolished in the US, only in certain states.

Second, you're not even right. The murder rate never "soared":

Murder rates have been falling across most of the US, and are on average lower in states that don't have the death penalty. I realize this doesn't prove anything about the (in)effectiveness of the death penalty in deterring crime, but it does disprove your claim that the murder rate "soared".
