Not pure, no. The depth and human interest material of the story is mostly focused on the objectification of people. The protagonist is coldhearted and emotionally withdrawn due to his past and sees human interaction as mostly material trade. The pets themselves are capable of forming very human bonds but do not have the same rights as humans, which is one of the primary sympathies of the story.
The story is designed mostly to endear and entreat you to the cast of characters and demonstrate a value beyond the material.
It also has a few subtle points which are quite nice, like all of the pets being 'marked' by their ears, yet the primary female cast all have hairstyles which mimic animal ears in their own right, making the distinction even less clear.
