I favor the characters because they have actual substance to them. If I wanted a generic ditzy teenager, I would go tune in to my area's anime network (I might be lucky enough to get Yuru Yuri reruns). Gensokyo allows for characters to have unrealistic traits. In fact, most of the characters have extremely uncommon/nonexistant traits, like Koishi, Suwako, and Nue.
