I think the primary difference between Western porn and Jav is their attitudes towards bringing about erotic arousal. The west seems to conflate pornography with obscenity which is reflected in the prevelance of vulgarity. Big dicks, big breast, hard fucking, loud cursing, etc. (Those things are present in JAV too but as the exception and not the rule).

JAV on the other hand seems to approach eroticism through the transgression of boundaries. Debut works have normal looking women having sex on camera, NTR transgresses both the line of consent and of monogamy, dudes casually partaking, incest works the line of family (also present in western porn but very undercooked).

There is nothing inherently wrong with the western approach but it does feel more limited than the Japanese's. There can only be so much phalluses going into so much orifices until one's nerve endings are burned out.
