I think you're putting too much significance in the 1988 club. Writing their situation in college probably isn't a massive undertaking, if it's just about how they're all doing and not some conflict or tragedy.

The gang is all pretty well established and to be honest I wouldn't expect them to act too differently from how we know them. Also the Sotsugou episodes that included the older gang had them all playing games and acting like friends just like normal.
