Hey Anon's. What if- just what if- Meiling is an Immortal?
She was born in a proto-Celtic tribe in that Tarim Basin 3500 years ago.
Disgusted with taking heads, and constantly being hunted she took up Buddhism 3000 years ago and has spent most of the three millennia since moving from holy ground to holy ground across India, Tibet and China.
In the 1930s she was a Communist- hence the hat- who fled from Chaing Kai-Shek into the International Community in Shanghai and fell in with Remi and Co. and joined them as she was impressed that there were other forms of immortal out there and these ones didn't want her head.
