Meiko wasn't some olympic mascot, and neither was Miku. They both just participated in some sport drink commercial (sure, those are usually just for Miku, but it's not something on the level of the olympics itself). People assume Miku would be a guest singer for the olympics because she won a sort of official poll (and the second was a k-pop band), and she does make sense to appear as someone unique from an important segment of the japanese culture and technology.
