While I'm not a full-fledged NEET, and don't want to end up as one, I certainly feel similar to you. The people I encounter in life don't feel as real to me as the characters I meet in fiction. And I feel people in the "real world" don't treat me as my true self, but the person they want me to be (as such I have avoided many relationships because I could instantly tell the person was more interested in the person they think I am rather than knowing anything about the true me).

The characters of fiction on the other hand, I imagine self-inserting myself into their story, of feeling inclusion and genuine acceptance in their special little groups, feeling ecstatic to lend my abilities to their cause, to explore worlds more fantastic than our own.

Gensokyo is especially appealing (well, the fanon at least, the canon is a bit more violent and dangerous at times...) Oh how I would love to just be an innocent and carefree fairy, living in a tree house in the magic forest with the other fairies. To play and to live a simple life: far from angry politicians, complex economic crises, and the depressing realities of adulthood.
