But perhaps when you both live long enough, you'll start getting moments of clarity, first only a few seconds, allowing you to look the girl you gave everything for in the eyes, knowing you made the right decision.
Then the it starts getting longer. Every few days you suddenly 'wake up' for a few minutes realizing that you are holding her and even what you are.
Those few minutes every few days turn into a daily occurance, slowly expanding from minutes to eventualy hours.
You've both started waking up, you still remembering who you were, but her only remember a single thing, you.

You don't know how much time has passed, it might have been months, years or even a hunderd years. But now, in the thick air of the barren field you both are settled in, you are both 'awake' permanently. You've started teaching her the basic knowledge you know, including speech, as she lost it all. But progress is going steadily and you oddly feel like you could control the fungus around you if you really wanted to.

As time passes you both learn to control both the fungus and its spores around you, and giving you control over your body, allowing you to unroot yourselves. She has learned as much as you could teach her, patiently taking in your knowledge to the best of her ability and learning to speak once again. Happily asking you to tell about those old memories you had together once again.

But now it is time to move on, even though your new form helps you feel happy in one place, you still feel like a part of life was taken from you.
The only question remains where you both will go, but looking into her eyes you feel like things will be okay.
