Outside of towns, I just throw down food or hand over a meal when I see the blue bar. I'd rather them eat something I prepared than take the chance that they randomly eat an undead corpse or something that lowers their attributes while I'm preoccupied with something else.

In town I'll actually load up their inventories with herbed in curarias. They eat when they're hungry and visit their trainer in between meals. Insures they're eating with potential somewhat high. The only problem with this method is you'll go through lots of gold and can blow your herb supply real fast but if you have the gold and herb supplies you can level up pet attributes quickly.

Don't really find managing pet hunger all too hard but I do find it amusing at how much a pet can eat. A mixed blessing with pets able to eat more next version. If you have enough supplies you could level up pet attributes quicker next version. Although you'll have to be more diligent in feeding them or they'll be pouncing on whatever corpse is on the ground.
