Kanji can have multiple readings: on'yomi and kunyomi (https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/onyomi-kunyomi/).). And「二つ」or「ふたつ」doesn't exactly mean two from what I know. It means two of something; two things. Like others are saying, the reading changes based on what it's compounding with or if it's being compounded. Most Kanji are actually read with their on'yomi when they're compounded. Numbers are different (not sure why kek). They are read with their kunyomi when in a「熟語」so this is why it's read as「ふたつ」instead of「につ」.

The on'yomi reading of「二」is「ふた」therefore 「二つ」= ふた + つ
= ふたつ

Another helpful thing to know: the kana that appears next to kanji are called「送り仮名」or okurigana (https://www.imabi.net/okurigana.htm).). I legitimately think learning this helped me memorize better. Also, use something other than Core 2k for vocab because it'll do confusing stuff like that. Personally, I recommend the WaniKani deck for those who are struggling with memorization. RTK is helpful for individual kanji practice too.
