R07 writes in response to his previous works, even within the same series (look at how Higurashi evolved, for example).

Higurashi is about hope and the power of friendship. Umineko shows how relationships can be broken beyond repair and that sometimes escapism is the only solution. Higanbana criticizes escapism and pointless daydreaming, showing what happens once you return to the real world after neglecting your real life for years. It also portrays dead people as being inferior to the living, powerless beings incapable of doing anything to improve their situation, a clear response to how Umineko romanticized Sayo's suicide and the afterlife of the Ushiromiyas. And RGD expands on the "alpha bully" theme from the Utopia/Thistle chapters but in a different context. The criminal underworld will exist no matter what, especially in an impoverished country full of people starving for employment. Primavera uses violence and murder to go up in the hierarchy and maintain their position of power, but their methods don't destroy the lives of innocent civilians (unlike Caleb's) and they have a noble goal in mind. Well, at least at the beginning. If they didn't take that position, some other villain with less noble intentions would. I wonder if Ciconia will talk about how the very idea of "belonging" to a certain culture is actually bullshit, or how leaving behind descendants isn't necessary for a meaningful existence. Not that RDG didn't touch on that a bit, but it was more inclined to the opposite direction.

The most obvious example of Ryukishi writing in response to his previous works is the EP8 ???? Tea Party. Ange basically turns Maria into a god by writing books about Sakutaro that teach millions of kids about Maria's philosophy and her way of finding happiness in a shitty situation. It's the same thing that Takano attempted to do for her grandfather, but she fucked it up and killed 2000 people, instead of learning from his selflessness and helping kids in need or something.
