It's feudal Japan, married couples have from 3 to 7 children, God-Man ZUN at young age (Just before putting em in the games) puts them in an arena while sipping his beer and watches, the last one standing (No matter how the others die: starvation, wounds or suicide) and the strongest one is allowed to exist, evolution at work, or at least it would be if they had any different feature thus making the game a grim show of chance and luck.
