Well, that makes sense in a twisted way. A near-perfect protagonist could become boring, so instead we have two flawed individuals as actual protagonists. That way, when Sanae pops up, she feels like a breath of fresh air. Especially in contrast with Reimu's less than heroic traits. It's reasonable for her to appear more sparingly.

It's important to realize that if you get a UFO and die, you've come out really behind, so it's never worth it. You really do have to prioritize dodging over getting UFOs, even if you lose a couple.
More questionable is bombing to get a green UFO. If you bomb to get a green UFO, you do come out ahead by 1/3 of a bomb, though that is at the expense of what you'd normally get from the UFO, so take that with a grain of salt.

And yeah, normally I enjoy the straight shots, but Sanae B is just so good for getting through stages unharmed.
