King Arthur was re-written as a girl for several reasons.

The character of Shirou became totally central to the story of Fate/Stay Night.
Type-Moon was still going the "pander to the otaku" route to sell their VNs, and a female protagonist would not have done.
And Takeuchi wanted the lead characters (who he'd draw the most, Shirou's drawings are limited to CGs and Tohsaka's perspective) to be cute girls.

It's funny because that's what happened in the original draft of F/SN with King Arthur and female-protagonist-not-Shirou.

Imagine this imaginary scenario.

Nasu makes a statement to the press about expanding the type-moon franchise.

4 months later, amid some leaks, Type-Moon announces an international release of Fate Stay Night with Sajou Ayaka (MC before Shirou) changed to MC, and Saber replaced with 'Saver' (again, the male prototype of Saber). Kotomine route is confirmed.
