Youkai that are evolved from basic animals, are embodiments of concepts, or belong to a distinct species of youkai were never human, although they may have existed in another form before becoming youkai.

While benevolent, Keine is a very, very disturbing character. Lovecraft comes to mind. Her thing is that basically what she writes into her scrolls is more "real" than what actually happened. It implies that anything we consider reality is actually less real than the things she just makes up on her own.
