I agree with the last bit. On one hand I find it sorta interesting that the beginning scene where Shiki wakes up in the hospital bed was actually the "birth" of the Shiki we play as, and this is fine for me when I play the near side routes because his past isn't that important to his relationship with Arc/Ciel.

But when I play the far side, Shiki's past before the accident is so much more important because his bond with Akiha/Hisui/Kohaku began back when they were children. So the way he considers his childhood self a different person becomes incongruous with the relationships he forms with each heroine.

Or maybe I'm getting mixed up. I know in Ciel's true end and the manga it's clear that Shiki views who he was before the accident as a different person, but maybe that doesn't apply to every route.
