They managed to kill the boss in one of my runs. I was trying to S rank that lewd bitch so it's a good thing I paid the flamethrowers. It required the 5 ship friends with Hiburi and Daito while a non-submarine was still alive. In every other run the friends did nothing whatsoever.

It's more efficient to just aim for A ranks by using both land bases to kill enough surface ships at the boss, and use route ASW support and 2 OASW to get there.
