Question: what does somethingawful, 2ch, futaba, and 4chan have in common?

Answer: they are all websites where the culture is shaped by the userbase. So in a sense, one can say they are all user moderated. Without userbase moderation, the aforementioned sites would be no better than animesuki.

Like it or hate it, angry post are what whips newcomers into shape. In the case of 4chan, we combine our angry post with sage inorder to tell newcomers what's acceptable and what is not acceptable. We define newcomers as people who post on boards before taking a while to understand the boards culture. In my opinion, if you know how to search for stuff on your own without requesting sauce, you know to ignore trolls, and you know how to use proper grammar you are a veteran (regardless of how long you've been here).

Some people think the phrase "userbased moderation" only refers to moderators and janitors. Well, there's another branch to user-based moderation. That branch is the users themselves. For example, this is what 4chan's /a/ would look like if it had no userbase moderation: https://www.7chan.org/a/

How can you protest against this sage function?

1). E-mail moot.
2). Make shitty threads on purpose. Pretend to be a newcomer, and laugh at people who are unable to sage your thread. Again, without the ability to sage, there is no method of telling newcomers the dos and don'ts of 4chan.

And to the people who say to simply ignore threads. Ignoring threads will not make bad threads go away. Ignoring only works on trolls (NOT on newcomers). Newcomers genuinely don't know they are doing something wrong. For example, if a newcomer from gamefaqs makes a thread about Touhou filled to the rim with emoticons. How would we tell him that emoticons are taboo on 4chan? We might not notice a difference in the short-term, but in the long-term, 4chan culture as we know it will be changed.
