After completing some of the chores around the house, Kumasawa invited me to the parlor for a odd little story she seemed to have recalled as she told me. It was about a man from her past, a loosely-related in-law. The man whose name she couldn't recollect had apparently served in the war. He had been exposed to some horrifying brutalities whilst out there, and on his return, was never quite the same.

Some years later, as Kumasawa would have it, the former soldier was in his study with his wife, as was his routine to study along with his wife. On this warm summer day however, he had been struck with exhaustion and he dozed off quickly, falling in to a nightmare of his brother Japanese being slaughtered by the enemy forces. Even in the nightmare the poor soldier got no rest as he got caught and was forced to watch as his brothers in arms are killed one by one. In the dream he was about to meet the same fate, when his wife, realizing her husband was asleep, tapped him on the back on the neck to wake him up. The sudden shock overwhelmed his already stressed system, and he immediately dropped stone dead.

I must admit at first I thought it was quite an amazing story, but thinking about it for a second time, something seemed off. Maybe it was just Kumasawas trademark laugh.
