I don't see how Mio could be an irrelevant character in Red Garden given her connection with Shiki. It seems Nasu added her character to the story to add another direct link to the Nanaya outside Shiki (same for Goto) since I suspect Shiki's demon hunter heritage will be much more relevant to the remake than the original. The conception of Mio's character also seems to be directly linked to Shiki, since they are both loosely inspired from the same manga.
