Kinda irks me how the only noteworthy legacy of Axanael is Sonico's band members, not the characters that are actually good.

As for the question itself, I believe that's just the case of Santa's sameface.

Short impressions on the Axanael trial:

They sure love Sumaga, don't they. It's like they've never made Gekkou at all. I understand that Sumaga is much closer in terms of atmosphere, but come on.
Sakura is best heroine ever. Period.
Chiaki has some potential awesomeness, and he's better than Nitori. Hope he won't die that easily.
KORE WA JIKEN is annoying, I can't believe she's voiced by the same person as FES. At least she's nice when not in detective mode.
Noko should have more spotlight. Even though she's so one-dimensional, that probably won't help her.
Nitori is as pathetic as expected. Time will tell whether's he's worse than Takumi or not.
Fuuri is much better than I thought. Her voice acting makes her as good as Anna.
There's so much support characters, it reminds me of Durarara. Except that Akihabara is not Ikebukuro, so all these weirdos sort of make sense.
The overall style is nice, I certainly like the yellow tones and all the small details in the interface. The lack of save function raises some eyebrows, but at least you have episode select screen.

Overall, this trial is too small to judge the final release, but it does give you enough to consider reading the rest.
