Eventually all mages need to add or switch over to ball spells for the extra oomph in damage. Magic Dart is a staple spell early on and you can save on MP in some one on one fights with it but the ball spells will win on all fronts in regards to damage and possibly MP costs when dealing with mobs. My Dart is level 920 but my Ice Ball is much lower level, level 675, yet it does so much more damage. My Magic Storm is a bit higher than my Magic Dart and does a whole lot more than Magic Dart. I've decided to train Fire Ball, Ice Ball, Magic Storm, and Thunder Vortex but the other ball spells I imagine are good too. The sooner you pick up training ball spells the faster you'll get it up to par with Magic Dart and have it eventually surpass it.

I do more damage than my pets. As an example, I do pretty good damage to the king in yellow despite it having a resist set of superb for all resists except normal for magic. That's the standard for the monsters at my depth of the void. There are only very rare exceptions where some monsters have more than normal resistance to magic but when that happens my damage is similar to my pets where I'm only scoring 15-25k damage. Interesting to see these enemies starting to cap their attributes.

Playing a cheerleader for your pets is fine. I do it too sometimes but don't feel like you're stuck in that role. You should be able to fight on the front lines too.
