All those hundreds of years worshiping the Emperor and the Imperial family came to an unexpected, brash, and humiliating halt proceeding Japan's announcement of surrender.

This had a huge negative social, spiritual, ethical, and historical impact on the Japanese. All of a sudden they had to reevaluate what it meant to be Japanese.

The Japanese had to fill the new whole or in their society, hearts, and minds, where upon that very whole use to be filled by the position of the "Divine Emperor".

In time idols rose to become what the Japanese filled for that empty position in their society, hearts, and minds.
They are like, yet somewhat higher than, America's Hollywood stars.

This is only a temporary solution to Japan's social, emotional, and spiritual gap though.
