Honestly if you are a foreign fan, in some respects it’s easier today to find people to discuss things with, though obviously the state of the industry is a downer.
With otome games, it used to be the case that most new releases were vita exclusives and since the vita didn’t have a working emulator until recently, you had to both own a console and have the skills to read Japanese with no text hooker (en releases were few and far between). The barriers to entry were pretty high. At the time I was a high schooler with no money and babby tier Japanese and I could only look on and seethe as my compatriots played games I thought looked cool like Sweet Clown and Psychadelica while I settled for an nth playthrough of tmgs3 or struggling through some partially translated PC game with VNR. Even if you only speak English you have a decent amount of options these days.
