Character designs are definitely different but I can't agree that they're worse. The shading/colours in UBW always felt a bit flat to me, especially compared to the films where the "lighting" tends to be a lot more dynamic.

They also simplified some character details in UBW a bit too much for the sake of fluid animation, Rin's hair being a pretty obvious example. Overall I think HF found a more comfortable middle-ground between the UBW designs and Takeuchi's art.
