They were Gender neutral before the demonlord, but where changed to female with her ascension. This also has the effect of restricting pslimes to infect only women and alps.

Canonically they simply divide like normal slimes through sex and currently cannot birth fully capable slime carrier daughters. However i do head canon it that you can have pre-infected babies, but it requires a lot more time then just doing a cell division.
