First of all, it's neither meant to improve or damage their image. Ryukishi is the ultimate minority supporter, doing it the right way, because he just writes them as people.
He doesn't have an agenda. R07 is not trying to make a point and tell you they're good or bad, he doesn't pull any punches and you can either rate those chars or understand a bit what they did and why.
Not sure if I explained right.
But it's better than any western story at this. I don't see it as faggotry. It's a story about magic and very tortured, mentally ill people.
