If you really don't enjoy it at all, then you would want to avoid it while you can. Yet you intentionally read and keep reading something like Higurashi and Umineko where every single episode has somebody suffering and you perfectly know it will keep happening.
If you are in for the murder mystery, then you admit it's okay to see people kill each other and enjoy the thrill of exposing somebody's dark secrets for as a selfish intellectual game, even if you might not be very fond of all the violent parts. Curiosity can be as sick as pleasure, Erika is the perfect example of this kind of sadist.
Perhaps you want to ultimately see characters overcome their struggles, but that's like saying you want to see somebody getting hurt just because their wounds will eventually heal and they will be happy about it.

The sadist is the kind of person who fully understands and accepts just how fucked up their nature can be, and has decided it's okay to do so. No need to hide behind "fiction" or any excuse, there's no corruption or anything, they don't even need to hate people, though it helps "justifying" their actions as well as adding the satisfaction of overpowering an enemy.

Indeed. In the end even if you want Rika to be happy, you want to keep watching the opposite.
Many sadists will actually only hurt people they love, with their consent.

Also, if you seriously couldn't relate not even a little bit, you would hate characters like the witches in Umineko, especially sick fucks like Bern and Lambda. Yet a lot of people love them, and I don't think all their fans are sadists.
