Failed vampire hunter? Adopted orphan? Lunarian spy? It's never really cleared up or given a concrete answer beyond rumours between characters in any canon source how exactly they first met and where Sakuya is even from. Despite her claimed age to be around 17 or in her late teens in several print works its unlikely Sakuya is really that young or even close beyond looking around that age. The SDM, it's owner and likely most of their household are from the Outside World and most likely Europe, is Sakuya even from Japan, yet alone Gensokyo?

Does she even know her real name or identify? Her near unquestioning loyalty to her mistress and difficultly knowing how to act or interact around humans in the earlier games suggests either she could either have been brainwashed into cult-like subservience with a loss of any previous identify or adopted and raised to be a servant by Remilia with little if any knowledge of anything outside her daily duties and service to her mistress. If she was a vampire hunter and failed to exterminate Remilia then it would explain why she ended up brainwashed and given Remilia has a adopted and cared for a human for a short time before they fled the SDM could also hint at that as a possible origin.

What other theories are there or that could be plausible and have at least have a very basic grounding in canon? Outright headcanon isn't really welcome but other direct or loosely canonical theories are encouraged.
