It's also worth mentioning that the faith attribute on equipment is really rare. You can save-scum and make a living weapon with faith in Plus, but other than that you are stuck killing hermit crabs until the shell drops. I usually end up getting it on new characters when doing intentionally failed farming quests to raise a few attributes early on in the game.

I can't really help, but what OS are you using? I've been having consistent troubles with Windows 8, even when using clean installs of both Elonas. Using compatibility mode hasn't helped at all.
