An old man working in the forest finds a baby girl with golden hair inside a bamboo stalk and takes her home to his wife. The girl unusually quickly grows into a young woman, whom they name Kaguya. With her in the house he mysteriously begins to find gold every time he cuts a bamboo stalk, and he soon becomes a wealthy man.
Eventually word gets around, and suitors begin to approach Kaguya. She keeps them off by demanding that each of them perform a nearly impossible challenge to prove their worth as husbands, asking each to bring a rare item from far away. The suitors tasked to find a salamander's pelt, a jeweled tree from Penglai and the buddha's begging bowl all attempt to cheat and are dismissed. A fourth dies attempting to retrieve a swallow's conchshell, and a fifth admits unworthiness after failing to retrieve a dragon's jewel.
Eventually Kaguya begins to grow restless and worried, and reveals out of the blue that she is actually from the moon. Why exactly she's on earth is unclear - the two more common versions claim she was either evacuated during a celestial war, or that she was exiled for some trespassing.
Eventually moon people come down, zap the emperor's guards and snatch Kaguya away.
