The biggest flaw is none of the characters are likable and I couldn't get attached to any of them, a lot of them literally have zero personality and only exist to do some quaint amount of exposition, like Rethabile's 2 partners who might as well not exist. The story spends far too much time on exposition regarding its setting and politics and not enough on characters, and as such I couldn't find myself caring for their development, their relationships or their health. I really, really hate Jayden, his type of loudmouth, energetic, cocky character is something that has to be done very carefully so as to not cross over into extremely annoying territory, and boy does he fall flat, which made me not care at all for his romance subplot. I was glad that his presence was diminished severely in the latter half of the story.

It's not just because of its large cast of characters, Umineko also started with a huge cast AND also had constant delving into exposition, be it for the setting, the backstory of the characters or the economical motivations of the adults. Yet it's a complete 180 in execution, the long scene with the adults arguing about money is one of my favourite scenes in Umineko, all because how smoothly Krauss causes a complete turnabout after being seemingly cornered by all of his siblings. I feel like Ciconia really missed out on combining character exploration alongside the exposition it loves so much.

I have a feeling it has something to do with this line, I thought Ryukishi spent too much time treating this chapter as an introduction but apparently he treats it as an ep3/4 of sorts, which I guess rings true with the climax of the story and how seemingly there won't be looping this time around? Every Umineko chapter had new chunks of explanation behind the backstory of everything, and Ciconia seems like it went too far with its opening chapter.
