"Please... please don't make me, Anonymous!"

Kisume sobbed and pressed her face against the side of the barrel. I continued to lower her down into the pit.

"Please! Please! Don't make me! I... I'm afraid!"

She must have caught the sound of something in the wind.

She was always afraid of the dark. Big things, crawly things, slippery things... that's what lived there, she'd say. I still remember when she used to climb though my window before dark and hide in my bed. When she stopped, I thought she had finally overcome her fear. I suppose I was wrong.

Whatever she heard (because there was no way she'd be able to see down there) must have sent her over the edge. She down far too deep in the dark to see or hear her clearly, but the swinging of the rope told me that she was struggling wildly.

The thrashing, the echoing wails -- as horrific as it was, at least it told me she was still in the barrel.

I continued to dole out the rope in my hands.

Kisume. I can't ask you to forgive me, but please come back safe.
