People often use the protagonist to shitpost when holos are having success. And sometimes in different contexts like in harem protagonist.
But as a teamate when I've said Ame is the protagonist, I've meant it in two ways. One is the lore, where she is the detective investigating all these other beings, so she's a protagonist in that sense. The other is the thematic arc of a typical protagonist.
Ame is the underdog, the one without prior success, the one with no outstanding skills, and the one with a large language debuff. Whenever I've cheered her as the protagonist, it's because those are the times where she succeeds despite her flaws.
Also, protagonist often has crisis of faith, and other things testing their resolve, and Ame has been going through those arcs of her story.
Btw, I hated /ameg/ months ago when it was first used, and I hate it now.
Funnily enough, given the aspects I mentioned earlier, Gura is probably closest to the protagonist status after Ame
