So what exactly does the Emperor of Japan do? I heard everyone making a big fuss over him going on tv and telling the nation to "ganbare", but I have no idea what his responsibilities are. Is he like the English Royal family in that he's just a tradition and part of culture that the country supports financially but besides waving to the public a few times a year is completely useless and meaningless?
