I definitely think it would be scarier if their takeover was more insidious or covert.

>TV is telling you not to go outside, don't listen to voices, shut off all your lights, lock your doors, don't harm or threaten to harm yourself or others as it will attract them, and don't trust any one who you don't see constantly, no matter how human they seem
>news tells you bullets, knives, or any physical harm won't do much to stop them
>they can show up anywhere, anytime, and have magic that can take control of your mind
I think a slower approach is definitely the more frightening one. Would be a good laugh when we all look back at how scared we were.
