the best time to start is yesterday. I've done half-assed study for two years and still can't read well as a result, but I can navigate my way around jp stores with the help of plugins like Yomichan to tell me what new kanji mean and how to say them.
even if you have brain damage you can learn hiragana in a week and then force katakana in just by reading loanwords
and when it comes to technology, there are an absolute ton of (english, but not always) loanwords. like live camera = ライブカメラ.
but take my advice, never set foot in /djt/ on this board, they're basically all tripfags eating eachother's shit and wallowing in irony.
