Eiki thought over the matter very carefully, then replied, “Well, it is possible, of course, to bring stone to life, as anyone who has read a fairy tale knows. So, if you bring me the lion which Tenshi's grandmother can carve from the entire world, I will breathe life into it.” Eiki smiled down at the children and silently congratulated herself on her cleverness.

But Komachi was not satisfied. “Honorable Grandmother,” she said, “couldn't you bring to life one of the lions outside of your gate? Then Tenshi and Kasen would be sure to believe me next time I tell them what wonderful things you can do -- especially if you make the lion bite them a little.”

Eiki frowned. “Of course I could do as you ask,” she replied, “but bringing a stone object to life requires an unusual amount of energy, and I am too tired just now.”

Instantly, the judge realized her mistake. The three girls looked at her accusingly. They knew she was making excuses. Komachi looked dejected.

“Very well,” Eiki said. “Let's go look at the lion. Perhaps I am not too tired after all.”

Eiki set out, followed by the three little girls. As they walked, the judge told them the marvelous story of the Chinese stone monkey who came to life. The girls listened, wide-eyed, and by the time they came to the gate where the marble lions stood, all three were quite sure that Eiki really had the power of bringing stone to life.
